For many wildlife lovers, the forests of Navegaon will always remind them of one tiger — the legendary Chota Matka. For almost four years he ruled the core and buffer forests of Navegaon with incredible strength and determination, taking over the territory after defeating the mighty Mowgli and defending it through several intense fights with other powerful males. What made Chota Matka truly special was not just his power, but his fighting spirit. Even after suffering injuries and walking with a limp, he continued to patrol and protect his territory. Seeing him survive and move through the forests despite the pain became an emotional story for many safari lovers and photographers who followed his journey over the years. Sadly, the mighty king's story did not end in the forests he ruled. Due to growing pressure from irresponsible tourism and the chaos created by social-media-driven wildlife chasing, Chota Matka now lives in rehabilitation, away from the wild landscapes that once belonged to him. But legends never truly disappear from Tadoba. His legacy continues through the next generation — through tigers like Nayantara, Chanda, and Kalva, who now carry his bloodline into the future forests of Tadoba. Today, the Navegaon buffers are largely dominated by Bali and Collarwala Male, while the core forests have once again seen the return of Mowgli's dominance. Dominant tigers of today: Mowgli, Babli, Collarwala Male, Nayantara, Bali — and the lingering land of Chota Matka.
