The single biggest decision
Each Tadoba zone has its own character. A first-time visitor should probably start at Moharli; a photographer might prefer Kolara; a naturalist might insist on Kolsa.
Moharli — the classic
Most popular core. Teliya Lake. Bajrang's bloodline. Highest sighting rates historically, but also the most jeeps. Worth booking despite the crowd.
Kolara — the photographer's pick
Quieter, scenic. Ruled by Tara, Choti Tara, and Chota Matka — the male who fought six rivals to take this zone. Open vistas at Jamni produce the kind of clean tiger shots you want to print.
Navegaon — the cinematic zone
Wide grasslands and the twin Panderpauni Lakes. Maya's old kingdom. Today held by Babli and Mowgli. The kind of landscape where you see a tiger long before you reach it.
Kolsa — the connoisseur's zone
Lake-fringed, rich in rare species — Indian Gaur in herds, Chowsingha, melanistic leopards. Historical bloodlines (Shivanzari, Kuwani, Dadiyal, Shivaji) branch from here across the rest of Tadoba. For repeat visitors and serious naturalists.
Buffer zones
Don't dismiss them. The Moharli buffer is where Madhuri and Waghdoh's stories played out. The Pangdi buffer is the leopard kingdom. The Belara buffer holds Veera, the boldest tigress in Tadoba. Lower permit cost, fewer jeeps, often very good drives.
